Eligibility
Admittance
to the summer program is competitive, with only 10-12 students accepted
per year. To be eligible, you must have completed an introductory
psychology course (e.g., General Psychology, Introduction to Psychology,
etc.) and a research methods course (e.g., Research Methods in
Psychology, Experimental Psychology, or some other course that focuses on
the design of research studies in psychology) by the end of the Spring 2008
term. You must also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or
higher (on a 4.0 scale) at the time of application. Students who will
graduate from their undergraduate institution before or at the end of the
Spring 2008 term are not eligible—only students who are continuing
as undergraduates in the Fall of 2008 should apply. The National
Science Foundation also requires that participants be U.S. citizens or
permanent residents of the U.S. or its possessions.
Students
from undergraduate institutions with limited opportunities for research
are encouraged to apply. We also encourage applications from groups that
are traditionally under-represented in psychology, including ethnic and
racial minorities.
Financial
Support
Admitted
students receive a stipend of $3600, paid in two installments during the
nine-week session. Students also get full room and board while
participating in the program, being housed in a dormitory room on campus,
and receiving a full meal plan for use in a campus cafeteria and the
student center. In addition, participants are given an allowance of up to
$500 for research expenses, and out-of-state travelers get up to $500 for
the travel expenses incurred while traveling to and from the site.
Application
Process
To
apply for the program, you must:
1. Complete
the online
application form. We
highly recommend that you first look over the form to see what
information is needed, gather the information, then complete the form all
at once. Note that you will need to list the psychology courses and
science courses you’ve taken, along with the grade in those
courses; you will need to summarize your research experience, if any; you
will need to provide your top three choices for research mentors, and
describe in 300 words or less why you’re interested in those
mentors; and you will need to state what you hope to gain from the
research experience and how the experience will help you to attain your
career goals, in 500 words or less. For items requiring longer responses (e.g., the 300- and 500-word
statements), we highly encourage you to write your answers ahead of time
in a word processing program, then cut and paste the text into the text
box on the application form. Note
that it is NOT possible save your work and come back to it later, nor can
you change your responses after the application has been submitted.
2. Have
two faculty members who know you well submit letters of recommendation on
your behalf. Be sure to
request the letters of recommendation well in advance. When you complete
the online application form, you will be asked to provide the names and
e-mail addresses of the two individuals who are writing letters for you.
At that time, the letter writers will be sent an e-mail with instructions
for submitting their letter online. This means that you should submit
your application in advance of the deadline in order to give letter
writers sufficient time to submit their letters. Letter writers must use
the online
recommendation form. We highly encourage letter writers to write
their letter of recommendation ahead of time in their own word processing
program, that way they can just cut and paste the text into the text box
on the recommendation form.
3. Have
your institution send an OFFICIAL transcript to: Program Coordinator, Summer Research Program on Mind and
Brain, Department of Psychology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins,
CO 80523.
Application Deadline: March 1st, 2008
Any
questions or problems should be directed to the Program Coordinator, Ed
DeLosh, at delosh@colostate.edu
